Great article .... sorry for the reason such a subject has to even be written about, but Nelson is always a compelling read, and a personal reminder to us all that a gentle reasonable humanity still exists.

(Can't help thinking of "Lord of the Flies" where in the end, the warring schoolboys are 'rescued' by a warship ... full of military adults....the irony is lost on many, but basically, I think the author is saying out of the frying pan into the fire .....now look at the adult world in which our kids are growing up ....and with the latest 'slapping' sport at hand, (seriously, who green lighted that?) one has to wonder how far do we go on this path before the next generations are led directly into the times of a Mad Max movie ...

How do we stop this insanity?!!

If you're not familiar with Dr. Gabor Mate, I highly recommend his work, particularly THE MYTH OF NORMAL. Our society is so deeply traumatized because almost literally everything we do creates trauma, from birth to child care (or lack thereof) to work to healthcare, etc. And since trauma begets trauma, it's escalating at an almost exponential rate. Guns are both a symptom and a cause of that culture. People often ask why do civilians need military style weapons? I'll go one further and ask why does the military? Maybe if we'd stop trying to control the world, we'd all be safer.

In any case, I'm sorry your granddaughter had to go through that and I'm glad she's physically okay. Might be a while before she's really okay.
