In religion and politics people’s beliefs and convictions are in almost every case gotten at second-hand, and without examination, from authorities who have not themselves examined the questions at issue but have taken them at second-hand from other non-examiners, whose opinions about them were not worth a brass farthing.
Trump’s “rallies” are really revival meetings, following the pseudo-“your only savior” path of Hitler and other demagogues, replacing church infallibility and doctrine with nostalgia for the past when white men were firmly in power, and women and any other men knew their place and kept their mouths shut.
I remember being in trouble most of my Catholic element4thary school career, always looking for the situational ethics exceptions to to the catechism we had to memorize and recite. Secondary school cautiously allowed questioning, and my college, just turning secular, encouraged downright revolution, just in time for the anti-war protests. Thanks for your insight on how Trumpism has happened; it makes sense.
