Ah...John Holt...our guide when we home schooled in VT. Next to the Cambridge-based Growing Without Schooling, Holt was the guide. And now we have this blog. Well done.
If you’re in the mood for a peculiar kind of fun, mention Benezet’s work on any forum inhabited by self-appointed “math ( or lieracy) warriors” (aka, members of “parents with pitchforks” groups. Their hatred for Benezet’s work is remarkably vehement.
The more they attack him, the more convinced I am that he was right.
Unfortunately, when the Math Forum died, my main opportunity to duel with the Mathematically Correct and NYC-HOLD crowd perished as well. It's always intriguing to see what fish rise to the bait when Benezet is mentioned, however. I first became aware of Benezet in the '90s when Sanjoy Mahajan posted information about him on the web and on the Math Forum. Here's a useful link: http://www.inference.org.uk/sanjoy/benezet/
