Nice piece, Steve - I enjoyed it. 1980 was my first presidential election. I cried when Carter lost and braced myself for Regan. Sure enough within months I lost my Pell grant that paid for much of my college tuition. I was told the federal poverty level had been lowered and my family no longer qualified. I remember telling the financial aid officer that someone needed to tell my parents we were no longer "poor' since they were both working two jobs. Regan's war on the poor was on as was his war on human rights. I mourned Carter's presidency as I protested Regan's Latin American policies and watched the federal lunch program at my first teaching job go from adequate to horrendous as vegetables disappeared from my students' plates. I'm glad Carter is getting the accolades he so deserves but his presidency being revolutionarily decent isn't news to me! Happy new year, Steve, and let's hope that incompetence can impede the clown president from doing too much damage.
