Joe Biden’s commitment to nominating a Black woman to replace Stephen Breyer on the Supreme Court is drawing heavy criticism - from the right and left. Readers may recall that he made this commitment initially just before the 2020 Democratic primary in South Carolina. Representative James Clyburn (D-SC), a man of great influence in South Carolina politics, urged Biden to do so and the rest, as they say, is history. Biden won the primary and the presidency in some or large part because of the Black vote.
The problem with identity politics is that it's used as cover to appoint neoliberal/neoconservative candidates who then can't be criticized because if you do you're racist/sexist/etc. We got a Black woman VP who was California's top cop who imprisoned women for their truant kids and fought to keep innocent men imprisoned for slave labor. That is not an advance for Black women.
Yes, it would be great to have a Black woman SCOTUS justice, but not just any Black woman will do.we need a strong left candidate to balance the insane rightward tilt of the current court, but watch Biden go and nominate the Black female equivalent of Merrick Garland.
It's so easy for 8th generation white folks to think they've accomplished what they have by the strength of their arms and the sweat of their brow. Fine column, Steve.
I heartily agree, and am saddened by the folks who refuse to see Biden’s move as an effort to have the Court represent the population makeup.
Agree with you once again. Thx for your insightful comments.
Given equal judicial qualifications, a Black woman would be the most qualified candidate, rounding out the sensitivies present on the Court.
